Carrigafoyle Castle
Carrigafoyle Castle was built by O'Connor-Kerry in the 1490's on the Shannon estuary near Ballylongford, County Kerry. It was a large tower house and was considered one of the strong Irish fortresses at the time.The siege of Carrigafoyle Castle took place at Easter in 1580 near Ballylongford on the River Shannon and was part of the English crown's campaign against Gerald Fitzgerald the Earl of Desmond . The castle was held by 50 Irish troops in the service of Desmond and 16 Spanish troops and the siege only lasted 3 days.
